The BWH/MGH Joint Nephrology Program is based at two major Harvard Medical School teaching hospitals and is one of the most influential nephrology training programs globally. BWH's renal medicine history dates to 1954 when Joseph Murray performed the world's first successful kidney transplant (Nobel Prize in Medicine), and Willem Kolff pioneered the Kolff-Brigham artificial kidney making long-term dialysis possible. BWH and MGH, as two major Harvard Medical School teaching hospitals, jointly conduct nephrology fellowship training, leading internationally in kidney transplantation, onconephrology, and glomerular disease.

BWH is an 800-bed academic medical center in Boston's Longwood Medical Area. MGH is a 1,000-bed academic medical center with the world's largest hospital-based research program. The joint program offers Clinical Track and Research Track, with fellows conducting research at BWH, MGH, Children's Hospital Boston, Broad Institute, Wyss Institute, and MIT IMES.
