The Department of Nephrology at Ruijin Hospital is a Ministry of Health key clinical specialty, Ministry of Education key discipline, and Shanghai key discipline. It is an internationally influential nephrology training base and national clinical pharmacology base, and one of the first institutions authorized to grant doctoral and master degrees in nephrology with a postdoctoral mobile station.

学术历史

Founded in 1965, became independent in 1976, it is one of the earliest and best-equipped nephrology specialties in China. First reported tubular acidosis (1958), macroglobulinemia diagnosed by renal biopsy (1992), and light chain deposition disease (1994). Established long-term collaborations with Columbia University Medical Center, Mount Sinai School of Medicine, and Paris VI University Tenon Hospital, becoming an ISN Sister Renal Center Program (Grade A).

The department has 90 ward beds, approximately 190,000 annual outpatient visits, and over 2,000 annual discharges. The blood purification center has 80 machines serving 320 maintenance hemodialysis patients. The department has 30+ physicians including 1 lifetime professor, 6 chief physicians, and 4 doctoral supervisors. It specializes in secondary kidney damage, hereditary kidney diseases, and tubulointerstitial diseases.
