The UCSF Division of Nephrology has trained leaders in academic nephrology, superb clinical and basic research scientists, and outstanding clinical nephrologists for over 50 years, with a longstanding international reputation for excellence in research.

The UCSF Division of Nephrology has been a major source of leaders and investigators in nephrology at academic centers throughout the United States for over 40 years. Currently, all UC Medical Center Nephrology Division Chiefs are UCSF fellowship graduates: UC Davis (Burl Don), UC Irvine (Kamyar Kalantar-Zadeh), UCLA (Ira Kurtz), UC San Diego (Joachim Ix). Stanford's Nephrology Chief Glenn Chertow is a former UCSF faculty member.

The UCSF Division of Nephrology has held an NIH T32 training grant for 47 years. In 2023, it received a new five-year U2C/TL1 training grant (4 pre-doctoral and 12 post-doctoral slots) called the LAUNCH program, spanning UCSF, UC Berkeley, UC Davis, and Stanford. It leads internationally in basic and clinical research including cellular transport, dialysis, and chronic kidney disease epidemiology.
