The Oxford Martin School was established in 2005, founded through a donation by James Martin, and serves as the University of Oxford's interdisciplinary platform for researching global challenges of the 21st century. The AI Ethics & Society Programme is one of the Martin School's core research directions, responding to the profound impact of AI technologies on social structures. The programme forms an Oxford AI safety and governance research cluster together with FHI (now closed), GovAI, the Institute for Ethics in AI, and other centers. The Martin School's traditional strength lies in interdisciplinary integration: deeply combining technical analysis with social science research to provide institutional design for AI governance that goes beyond a purely technical perspective. The programme has participated in academic advisory roles during the EU AI Act formulation process.
