The Department of Nephrology at Zhongshan Hospital, Fudan University is one of the founding institutions of blood purification technology in China, a key discipline of the Ministry of Education, and the host institution of the Shanghai Institute of Nephrology and Dialysis and the Shanghai Key Laboratory of Kidney Disease and Blood Purification. It is an important base for kidney disease medical care, research, education, and talent training in China.

学术历史

In 1973, participated in developing flat-plate hemodialysis machines and began hemodialysis treatment. In 1975, successfully performed cadaveric kidney transplantation. Became independent as the Department of Nephrology in 1982. Recognized as a national key discipline by the State Education Commission in 2002, listed as a Ministry of Health key clinical specialty in 2012, and established the Shanghai Institute of Nephrology and Dialysis in 2014.

Department Director Ding Xiaoqiang leads 35 physicians including 3 senior and 7 associate senior titles. The department has 59 ward beds, admits over 2,550 patients annually, and sees over 140,000 outpatient visits per year. It offers specialty clinics for diabetic nephropathy, hypertensive nephropathy, urinary tract infections, and lupus nephritis. It leads the nation in blood purification technologies (CRRT, MARS, immunoadsorption) and acute kidney injury prevention.
