Institute for Ethics in AI

United Kingdom · PhD/Postdoc/Fellowship

The University of Oxford's Institute for Ethics in AI is the world's first university-level research institute dedicated exclusively to AI ethics, focusing on the moral philosophy, value alignment, and societal impact of AI technologies. Building on Oxford's world-leading position in philosophy, the institute provides a comprehensive theoretical framework for AI alignment, from metaethics to applied ethics.

学术历史

The Institute for Ethics in AI was established in 2021, led by the University of Oxford's Faculty of Philosophy and supported by institutions including the Leverhulme Trust. The institute was founded in response to the ethical vacuum emerging from the rapid development of AI technologies, bringing Oxford's traditional strengths in moral philosophy (such as Derek Parfit's normative ethics and John Broome's decision theory) into the AI alignment discourse. The institute forms an AI safety and ethics research cluster together with Oxford's GovAI, Global Priorities Institute, and other centers. Oxford has a long-standing accumulation in AI ethics: Nick Bostrom's "Superintelligence" (2014) is a foundational work in the field.

当前状态

The institute currently operates multiple research directions: the philosophical foundations of AI value alignment, the moral status and rights of AI, AI bias and fairness, and AI and democratic governance. It offers a DPhil (Oxford doctoral) program and Fellowship opportunities. The institute regularly organizes AI ethics seminars and international conferences, and participates in academic advisory roles for policy-making processes such as the EU AI Act. The institute maintains ethical research collaborations with companies including DeepMind.
