The Department of Nephrology at Peking University First Hospital was founded in the 1950s by Professor Wang Shuxian, a founder of nephrology in China, and was the first nephrology specialty in the country. Under the leadership of Professor Wang Haiyan and subsequent generations, it has developed into an internationally renowned nephrology specialty, ranking first in nephrology in the Fudan China Hospital Specialty Rankings for 14 consecutive years and first in the China Hospital Science and Technology Evaluation Metrics (STEM) for nephrology for 10 consecutive years.

学术历史

Founded in the 1950s as China's first nephrology specialty. Became one of the first doctoral degree programs in 1981, a Ministry of Health Key Laboratory for Kidney Diseases in 1992, a national key discipline in 2007, an MOE Key Laboratory for Chronic Kidney Disease in 2011, and selected as a Peking University Double First-Class discipline in 2017. Professor Wang Shuxian laid the foundation, Professor Wang Haiyan brought it to international prominence, and Professor Zhao Minghui reached the international frontier in autoimmune kidney disease research.

The department focuses on five academic directions: severe immune nephritis, acute kidney injury, rare kidney diseases, chronic kidney disease, and renal replacement therapy. It has 15 doctoral supervisors and 3 master supervisors, including 1 national leading talent, 2 Cheung Kong Scholars, 7 NSFC Distinguished Young Scholars, and 4 NSFC Excellent Young Scholars. It reaches the international frontier in IgA nephropathy, ANCA-associated vasculitis, and lupus nephritis research.
