学术历史
CITP was founded in 2005 by Ed Felten, initially focusing on technology policy and cybersecurity. Beginning in the 2010s, the center expanded its research agenda to encompass AI ethics and algorithmic governance. Arvind Narayanan's research on algorithmic fairness and Olga Russakovsky's work on AI bias constitute the core of the center's AI ethics research portfolio. Princeton's distinctive positioning in AI ethics stems from combining the strong technical foundation of the Department of Computer Science with the policy research tradition of the Princeton School of Public and International Affairs, forming a dual-driven technology-policy research model. The center has also led portions of the research collaboration with the AI Now Institute.

CITP regularly publishes technology and policy reports and participates in scholarly advisory roles in United States AI policy formulation. The center collaborates with institutions including the Data & Society Research Institute.
