The Department of Nephrology at Peking Union Medical College Hospital was founded by Professor Bi Zengqi in 1979 and is one of the earliest nephrology departments in China. It has extensive experience in treating refractory nephrotic syndrome, IgA nephropathy, lupus nephritis, and ANCA-associated vasculitis, serving as an important center for difficult and severe kidney disease diagnosis and treatment in China.

学术历史

In 1979, Professor Bi Zengqi established the nephrology group at Peking Union Medical College Hospital, one of the earliest in China. In 1980, a nephrology laboratory and hemodialysis unit were established. In the 1990s, young scholars returned from abroad, injecting new vitality. The department led the nation in using cyclosporine A for refractory nephrotic syndrome, anti-PLA2R antibody diagnosis of membranous nephropathy, and rituximab for refractory nephrotic syndrome. In 2016, Professor Li Xuemei first reported internationally that hydroxychloroquine effectively reduces proteinuria in IgA nephropathy.

当前状态

The department has developed into a modern nephrology center including outpatient, inpatient, blood purification (including peritoneal dialysis), and laboratory services. It has 3 professors, 2 doctoral supervisors, and 10 associate professors, with 90% of attending physicians holding doctoral degrees. Over 50% of patients are difficult and severe cases, many referred nationally for refractory glomerular diseases. It has distinctive strengths in membranous nephropathy (anti-PLA2R antibody), IgA nephropathy, diabetic nephropathy, and hereditary kidney diseases.
