Stanford University
Institute for Human-Centered AI (HAI)
United States · PhD/Postdoc/Fellowship
Stanford HAI is the flagship interdisciplinary research institute for human-centered AI, integrating computer science, philosophy, psychology, and law to investigate AI ethics, human-AI collaboration, and AI governance. HAI situates AI alignment within the framework of human well-being and societal impact, serving as a global benchmark for research at the intersection of technology and ethics.
学术历史
HAI was established in 2019, co-founded by Fei-Fei Li and John Etchemendy with support from multiple donors. The institute was created in response to the lack of human-centricity in the rapid development of AI technology, consolidating Stanford's strengths in AI technology (SAIL) and the humanities and social sciences into a unified platform. HAI builds upon Stanford's long-standing tradition in technology ethics, including Terry Winograd's human-centered computing paradigm and James Landay's ubiquitous computing ethics. Since its founding, HAI has rapidly become a major hub for AI ethics and governance research worldwide, regularly publishing the AI Index Report.
当前状态
HAI currently operates across multiple research directions: AI ethics and values, AI governance and policy, human-AI collaboration, economic impacts of AI, and AI healthcare ethics. The institute offers annual Fellowship programs and PhD student funding initiatives. It offers courses such as CS257 (Fairness in Machine Learning). HAI publishes the AI Index Report annually, which has become the authoritative data source on the state of AI development and safety worldwide. The institute maintains collaborative partnerships with companies including Google and Microsoft.
