学术历史
LCFI was established in 2016 with £10 million in funding from the Leverhulme Trust, making it the first large-scale AI safety and ethics research center in Europe. The center's founding responded to calls from scholars including Stuart Russell and Stephen Hawking regarding AI safety risks. Cambridge holds a unique position in AI safety: it combines the strong technical foundations of the Department of Computer Science (such as Zoubin Ghahramani's Bayesian ML research) with a deep philosophical tradition (such as Huw Price's philosophical analysis of existential risk). The center maintains close collaboration with Oxford's Future of Humanity Institute, jointly building the UK AI safety academic ecosystem.

LCFI currently operates multiple research directions: technical approaches to AI safety (uncertainty modeling, value learning), the societal impacts of AI, and AI ethics and governance. The center offers a doctoral training program that accepts applications from the Department of Computer Science and the Faculty of Philosophy. It regularly organizes AI safety workshops and international conferences. Cambridge also participates in the Alan Turing Institute (the UK's national institute for AI) AI safety research network.
