Sichuan Fine Arts Institute was founded in 1940, originally as the Sichuan Provincial Art College. The Chinese Painting Department developed under the foundational work of pioneers such as Feng Jianwu and Li Wenxin, with an emphasis on expressing the regional character of Bashu landscapes. Following the reform and opening-up period, the institute became renowned for the 'Scar Art' movement and the '85 New Wave,' and this avant-garde spirit also influenced Chinese painting pedagogy, giving the landscape painting program a more experimental and contemporary character built upon traditional foundations, forming a distinctive trajectory different from the Northern and Jiangnan schools.

The School of Chinese Painting and Calligraphy offers directions in landscape painting, figure painting, bird-and-flower painting, and calligraphy. The Bachelor's curriculum emphasizes the integration of copying masterworks with plein-air sketching, while also encouraging cross-media experimentation. Leveraging the natural landscape resources of the Bashu region, the school regularly organizes sketching trips to Mount Emei, Mount Qingcheng, the Three Gorges, and other locations.
